Scarves & Snoods

Snoods were traditionally ornamental hairnets or decorative fabric bags worn over the back of the hair by ladies. Now snoods for women or for men are tubular scarves worn around the neck. They are also called circular scarves and are as much worn for decorative purposes as for warmth. They are versatile and can be pulled up over the head and worn as a hood.

Snoods are available in a large variety of styles and materials. They are often worn instead of ladies scarves, so they are usually bought to match outfits. Some are made of thinner material like printed cotton with floral or geometric designs. This type of material is often crushed or pleated to give it volume or simply because of what is fashionable that season. At the moment ethnic Africa colours and designs are very popular and many accessories reflect that trend.

For winter, one material of choice is faux fur in natural colours or occasionally bright ones; knitted or even crocheted items with lots of texture are big news at the moment for jerseys and accessories, especially as it is always winter somewhere on the planet. There are many patterns available for knitting your own.

This accessory has become very much of a fashion statement, showing up at football matches and even around the necks of dogs. Big names in designs for snoods for women are NUMPH, Michael Kors and Diane von Furstenberg. Those for men are often very chunky and feature textured knits like Aran, mostly in neutral colours.
